OURSTORIES.ABSBERGGASSE

An exhibition tells the history of the newly built subsidized housing estate

Project commissioned by:

  • Familienwohnbau - Housing Cooperative
  • Österreichisches Siedlungswerk - Housing Cooperative

The exhibition tells the history of the newly built subsidized housing estate Absberggasse 40. More than 25 residents were interviewed before moving in. Three topics were discussed in the interviews: the everyday life before moving, the expectations of the new life in the subsidized estate and the ideal housing situation. In the exhibition, residents tell the history of their estate in several chapters:

Flags

During the COVID 19 lockdown in spring 2020 citations from the interviews were at display in the entire residential complex; they were exposed on altogether 40 white Flags on balconies and in windows.

Former places of residence

Previous places of residence of the interviewed persons have been traced and reproduced as drawn maps, without revealing the identities. These maps have been complemented by selected quotations from the corresponding interviews. They are at display in the community rooms of the residential complex.

Audio tracks

Selected interview sections were read up by young inhabitants of the building and by professional actors. These sound stories can be listened to in the exhibition and online.
