CULTURAL FESTIVALS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Decentralized Cultural Festivals in Vienna: Assessment and Potentials

Project commissioned by:

  • City of Vienna, Municipal Department 7 (Culture and Science)

Art festivals are increasingly moving out of the established institutions and “into the city”, into supposedly decentralized districts. This goes hand in hand with the aim of reaching people who are otherwise rarely addressed by institutionalized cultural events. The intention is to create a dialog and direct exchange with residents of the districts. This approach is explored in the research project using the summer festival “Kultursommer Wien” as an example. Its resonance in different districts of Vienna is analysed and compared. The study takes the neighbourhoods and the local realities of their residents as entry point. The research is located at the interface of neighbourhood research and qualitative visitor evaluation. On that basis we underline possibilities for future developments regarding artistic work in neighbourhoods that are usually not addressed by institutionalized cultural actors in Vienna.
